03 The Rule

going to a smaller unit → multiply quarts to pints: more pints than quarts

going to a bigger unit → divide cups to pints: fewer pints than cups

The ladder runs gallon → quart → pint → cup → fluid ounce, each rung a factor of 4, 2, 2 and 8. Stepping down it multiplies; stepping up divides. Every blank on this question is one or two rungs.

Common slips

(1) Multiplied when you should have divided. The check is instant: is the new unit smaller or bigger than the old one? (2) Used the wrong rung. A quart is 2 pints, not 4 — the 4 belongs between gallons and quarts. Read it off the table rather than recalling it. (3) Skipped a rung. Cups to quarts is two steps, not one.
