Where the extra $3.50 comes from
The second markup is 70% of $55, not of $50. That extra $5 of base earns 70% of itself, which is $3.50.
In multiplier terms: 1.10 × 1.70 = 1.87, not 1.80. The true combined markup is 87%, not 80%. Multiply the factors and the arithmetic tells you that without any reasoning at all.
