Why adding it back fails
A tempting shortcut is 9,840 + 18% of 9,840 = 11,611. That is not 12,000, and it is wrong because the 18% was taken from 12,000, not from 9,840. Eighteen percent of the bigger number is 2,160; of the smaller one it is only 1,771.
Division is what undoes multiplication. There is no shortcut around it.
