round only at the end, to what was asked “nearest tenth” means one decimal place
The mental tricks do not help here — 16.4% of 318 does not decompose into tens and fives. Convert the percent, multiply once, then read the rounding instruction and follow it exactly.
Common slips
(1) Converted the percent wrong. 16.4% is 0.164, not 1.64 or 0.0164. Two places, always. (2) Rounded to the wrong place. “Nearest tenth” is one decimal place; “nearest hundredth” is two. The question always says which. (3) Truncated instead of rounding. 52.152 to the nearest tenth is 52.2, not 52.1.
