Introduction to expectation

A sample tells you a proportion. Multiply it by the size of the whole population to predict how many. One division and one multiplication.

Library books

A librarian samples the collection and finds 510 undamaged, 63 with minor damage and 27 with major damage.

Of the 24,000 books in the collection, how many should be expected to have minor damage? Round to the nearest whole number.

A clean multiple

A sample of parts contains 288 good, 36 reworkable and 36 scrap.

Of the 15,000 parts produced, how many should be expected to be reworkable? Round to the nearest whole number.

An untidy answer

A sample of library books shows 782 undamaged, 71 minor damage and 42 major damage.

Of 36,500 books, how many should be expected to have minor damage? Round to the nearest whole number, and do not round intermediate calculations.

Find what fraction of the sample fell into the category, then apply that same fraction to the full population. The only real decision is the denominator, and it is always the total sample, which usually means adding up several numbers the question lists separately.
Common slips
(1) Forgot to total the sample. If the question lists 782 undamaged, 71 minor and 42 major, the sample is 895, not 782 or 71. (2) Rounded the proportion first. Keep it unrounded and round only the final count. (3) Gave a decimal answer. Books and people come in whole numbers; round at the end.
